A Special Release Pikachu Promo Seeks to Be Super Effective Against Resellers

To celebrate the launch of a captivating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, an exciting partnership has been formed. Pokémon's creators alongside London's Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop featuring special merchandise. Fans will find offerings including stationery, plushes, and artwork all drawing from the institution's aesthetic. The big draw, though, is a specially made Pikachu card, given as a gift with purchase for the pop-up. This shop will operate both on-site at the museum to online between late January and mid-April.

The Book That Inspires the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology represents a much-awaited volume filled with stunning illustrations depicting Pokémon in their wild environments. It's essentially like what an in-world scientist might publish once adventurers provide field notes, or what Charles Darwin might have created if the Galapagos teemed with flying-types instead of birds. A key appeal stems from the book's serious approach, treating Pokémon as worthy of scientific study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara together with illustrator Chihiro Kinoshita each possess PhDs in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Special Card Different

It is common for The Pokémon Company special edition promos celebrating big events or brand collaborations. A lot such collector items often feature the famous mouse Pokémon that acts as the series face. What distinguishes this latest museum card however, is the distinctly bigger dimensions. Although precise specs were not publicly disclosed, availability will certainly be highly restricted, with customers able to get only a single card with each transaction.

Limiting Reseller Activity

According to a company announcement, a portion of the pop-up items may also be available outside the museum walls. However, broader availability will only be select retailers within the United Kingdom. Importantly, collectors will not be able to acquire the card via the online Pokémon Center. Although speculator demand is inevitable, the setup suggests they're going to have trouble stockpiling large numbers this time around. If you're feeling left out, consider the upcoming fossil-themed display coming to Chicago in the coming months.

"All profits of sales made in the museum store and from its online store, which covers these items, support the Natural History Museum’s non-profit work. That encompasses the efforts of 400 scientists who are conducting studies to discover solutions to the planetary emergency," it says.
