Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Unilever Halted Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Product
One of the original creators of the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever stopped the introduction for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, that established the business alongside his partner, revealed that he will independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual series highlighting issues the company has been barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Between Founders and Corporate Owner
This latest announcement deepens the ongoing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the British packaged goods giant which acquired Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
The co-founders have claimed that Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented their company from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet becoming an Emblem for Solidarity
Mr. Cohen announced via social media that he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored sorbet, requesting public suggestions for the product's name and additional components.
“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm making a watermelon-flavored ice cream that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians and calls for repairing the damage that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, that mirror the colors in the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Historical Social Engagement plus Recent Changes
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which was first established several years back for endorsing former political contender Senator Sanders with the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Shifts and Future Plans
The founder revealed that he will develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on issues that the company was silenced from speaking about openly by corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's recently, after many years of involvement, mentioning worries that the company's autonomy had been undermined after corporate moves to curb its social activism.
At that time, Mr. Cohen remarked that “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
"My heart leads me to keep working inside the company to fight for its independence ensuring that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values which established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
