California's Governor States He Is Considering a Presidential Campaign for 2028
Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 following the 2026 elections are over.
"Yeah, it would be dishonest if I said no," the governor commented when questioned about giving serious thought to a campaign for president post the 2026 ballots. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."
Newsom's time in office as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he noted that any choice is a long way off.
"Fate will determine that," he remarked.
Rising Profile as a Trump Critic
The California governor has emerged as a notable opponent of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and championing a proposition that would increase the party's representation in Congress in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has made him a target from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, alleged that the governor is indifferent about the state's residents in a recent interview on a major news network. The secretary announced intentions to cut taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened suspending the state's ability to provide CDLs.
"I'm about to pull a significant sum from California," Duffy said, in the wake of a recently reported deadly accident in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that caused fatalities and four injuries.
Newsom's office highlighted that the federal government had approved the individual's authorization on several occasions, which enabled him to obtain a trucking license under federal law.
The transportation secretary had previously stated he was blocking $40 million from California for failing to implement English language requirements for truck drivers.
Firm Rebuttal from the Governor's Office
"Ex-reality TV personality, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," his administration retorted in a last month's release responding to the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: The state's commercial driver's license holders had a death rate much lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the only state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate almost 50% higher than California. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
Voter Sentiment and Future Prospects
A recently conducted study revealed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate said that Newsom should run for president in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has grown to an average of a third from around 30%, while his negative ratings has decreased from an mean of previous highs to 38.4%.
In previous months, Newsom remarked while visiting several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his future for 2028.
He mentioned his earlier challenges, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.
"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, by itself, amazing," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
