Condemnation Surges as Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Draws Fierce Backlash

Figures from both sides of the partisan aisle and the entertainment industry are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Post

Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to his platform to label the late director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he claimed Reiner's death was "due to the hostility he provoked others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "Golden Age of America".

Police Update and Detention

Authorities have since announced the arrest of the couple's adult son, Nick, on charges related to homicide in connection with the incident. It is reported his bond was established at a significant amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was swift and scathing.

This is a disgusting and vile statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. Goldberg pointed to previous rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no shame? Can you get any worse?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "This is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a despicable piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just lost it. Now implying Rob and Michele Reiner caused their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Criticism from His Own Party

A number of Republican elected officials also expressed disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the situation was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to struggles with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.

Another GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He openly dared others in his political party to justify the statements.

Reiner's Legacy and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous conversation, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy if Trump be reelected to power.

"We see autocracy on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."

Regardless of his pointed criticisms, Reiner had previously expressed "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of a different political figure.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" while being photographed on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
