Hardline Ex- Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile's Next Leader.
In a decisive second-round vote, hardline figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Victory
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Campaign Built On Law and Order and Migration
Known for his staunch Catholic views and praise for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's electoral bid was largely centered on promises to address rising crime and significantly curb immigration.
He consistently pointed to migrants, especially the approximately 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the campaign, he gave an ultimatum for them to leave before the new term begins or face deportation.
His plans included Trump-inspired measures such as building detention centers, barriers, electric fences, and strengthening the military presence on the northernmost frontier.
Amid a Continental Trend
Numerous analysts view Kast's victory as part of a larger right-wing trend in South America, following recent political results in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other experts also describe it as a continuation of the established alternation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Solid Mandate
In spite of his decisive electoral win, Kast is not expected to have an overall majority in parliament, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if various right-leaning parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation might complicate his plans, including a promise to cut public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a measure for which he has not detailed concrete steps.
"We have numerous aspects about how a Kast administration will operate that we don't know because he has not detailed the way he will do them," noted a political science professor.
The professor continued, "In terms of fiscal matters, it is almost certain we will see spending cuts common for the right-wing. But where there is much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his workhorse during the race."
