Israeli citizens mark two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Palestinian peace talks continue
People have gathered across the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as negotiations advanced in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.
The incident saw more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others captured away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the uniquely most lethal day for Jews since the World War II.
Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, according to the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its statistics are regarded as reliable by the United Nations and other world agencies.
"Our bloodthirsty adversaries have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the destruction of the Hamas government and the assurance that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".
Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel
The national leadership delayed official remembrance events until mid-October - after the end of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still were held throughout the country on that day.
A remembrance service for the families of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in Tel Aviv. Put together by the affected families, it was broadcast across Israeli broadcast stations.
A period earlier, a moment of silence was held around the country.
Negotiation Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, both sides' representatives gathered in the North African Red Sea resort of the negotiation venue for a continuing round of third-party negotiations to discuss the conditions of the agreement.
A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the talks said that an evening round of negotiations started at 7 PM local time.
The official explained the day's discussions finished without significant progress, amid differences over the suggested Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not recommence fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.
He added that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any real breakthrough," but noted that facilitators are making efforts to close the gaps between the both parties.
Critical Points in Discussions
- A lasting truce
- The trade of the hostages still kept by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for assistance distribution
- Post-war governance of the territory
Public Sentiment
In the city's Hostages Square that day, young a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the gathering, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were taken hostage by Hamas militants - shared: "No place feels like home anymore and until all the hostages are released no one will have peace of mind."
"Once we see all home again, we can breathe once more. Then we can start to recover," she concluded.
Outside the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to express their backing for the families of the abducted. Israel states 48 stay in confinement in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be living.
Activist one woman stated: "We must do every compromise required for the hostages to come back home. But we truly desire promises that we will be secure."
Research now consistently show that approximately 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the war to finish in exchange for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the location of the gathering, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From that location, the boom of Israeli air strikes and artillery could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people indicated the severe Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the urban center, air and artillery strikes were reported in the morning of Tuesday in the western neighborhood, area and zone districts and in the east side neighbourhood of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"Once the night falls, the dread arrives with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike last year, shared.
"Me and my three children are fearful of the attacks. During nighttime we are lying together, holding each other, especially my youngest child who rests his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we check the updates to see the situation. And I'm worried that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the fighting will come back to us."
Humanitarian Crisis
Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had accepted the bodies of several people by the midday, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.
Nasser hospital in the south region of that area reported two more fatalities had been brought there. An individual was lost his life by Israeli forces while looking for aid to the south, health workers reported.
