Manchester United Poised to Sign Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific Germany striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Marquee Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her contract, is known as a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. Her arrival is viewed as a major coup for the WSL team.
Her exit from Bayern was expected since she was seen holding back emotions while applauding the German club’s supporters after a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was losing one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Boost the Attack
The 28-year-old’s arrival is expected to provide a significant boost to United’s forward line. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Momentum at Carrington
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United seem to be building momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
Regarding Miyazawa’s extension, a club official commented: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
