Our Diamond Family Unofficial Gaming of the Year List for 2025
Alright, how did you experience this year in your family? Was it truly wonderful as you pretended on Facebook? Full of academic success for your offspring and riotous costume celebrations for the grownups? Or perhaps it was a ocean of frustration with only rare entertaining highlights? Could any part be genuine, or have we all become seven-fingered AI slop beings with unrealistic smiles?
I've assembled the family for a reflection, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the crucial thing in any given year: what titles we were obsessed with the most. So here goes:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"This isn't my personal ranking."
On her phone, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Release Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Point taken.
Release Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into drama school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also went on in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Title the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. On her phone: something called Woodle, where you have to unscrew pins.
Release I Laughed at My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Any time I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to toughen him up so he can grow up and play games for grownups. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member 2025
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is incredible. More impressive than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this insanely well-crafted deck building competitive game, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Title I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The worst thing about games that endlessly add to their range is you wake up one day and realise it is all just an attempt to trap you with fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Glorious reinvention of a classic franchise. Captivating atmosphere from the start. I wish I could eviscerate my demons so effectively in real life.
Title I Wish I Had Played More (Puzzle-Focused Edition)
Blue Prince
I'm unwilling to rush this stunning, original game and I just was short on the mental bandwidth to give it what it required earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after family time.
Game That Saved My Soul When I Needed It
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was the previous year's sleeper hit, but I was a late adopter. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a brilliant concept, but the powers behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play constantly. Throw in the wittiness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I wouldn't mind being stuck in a broken-down lift for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Game I Got the Most Backlash For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a bit of backlash when I mentioned how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I valued even more after slogging through Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the commenter who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "bitter, confused resentment". I present that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Title Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a punishingly tough non-linear thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". Great fun. I acknowledge that it is beautiful and is perfection if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I want less of in my current stage of life. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming Controversy of 2025
Debate between corporate partnerships that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both difficult to justify and unpleasant.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Crazy Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names shouted from the back door at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of console gaming or phone use, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs insured back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to wait patiently until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
