Tetris Couldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

Whenever a major awards ceremony nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait 35 years.
