The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Will End... Currently.

Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would emerge as a massive hit. “I am so grateful to the audience,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”

With the first season of the popular series coming to an end—and the next chapter officially in the works—the writers' room reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will shape the narrative path of Pluribus.

Regarding the Overwhelming Audience Reaction

It would be easy to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and online debates regarding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is striving to ignore the noise.

“It feels like an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. It's not a lack of interest. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“We don't try to tailor anything,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by what people are saying.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Has Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

So if the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.

“We've developed some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a better idea. That has held us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we conceive of something superior and I expect we'll continue doing that.”

Then again, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”

Of course, one could always use the legendary finales?

“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
