The British designer Antony Price, the influential UK-based designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks worn by artists from David Bowie to Roxy Music and even royalty like Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows less than a month after he unveiled his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

An Enduring Influence

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price moved to London in the early 1960s to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.

He launched his own brand in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who was also seen in the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the singer wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his expert craftsmanship in designing body-hugging looks established him as a "true original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

In the 1990s, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, now Queen Consort, such as several ensembles for her American tour after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Performative Style: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Genre-Blending Design: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The industry says farewell to a authentic original whose legacy on fashion and music remains profoundly felt.
