The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.

A brand new six-episode season written by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, as confirmed by the network.

The actress expressed excitement about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Her co-star remarked, "How wonderful it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."

The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a new season have been circulating for some time, but official word only arrived recently.

New Challenges for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Vicky McClure's role, and Ted Hastings continue working to combat misconduct within the law enforcement.

Their work "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.

However, this investigation could be a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.

Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio commented: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."

"We're privileged to have had countless fans watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."

Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in the UK is supposed to have ended while the series was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my imagination."

Cast Reactions

The Scottish actor called being part of the police drama as "the role of a career".

"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."

"I can't wait to wear the uniform again and reunite with everyone," he said.

Vicky McClure remarked: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"

The veteran actor commented: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming soon."

"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected plot developments."

Show History

The drama premiered in 2012 and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.

The BBC has not yet announced when the upcoming series will hit screens.

The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.

However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
