The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

When I walk into the room, Lamine Camara picks up a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a powerful symbol for a ambition he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His resolve and natural ability won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a club executive or manager, but his own father. “He was against me to play football simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Overcoming Early Hurdles

In time, on “a special day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged his hometown team Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – were convinced immediately. After Camara was named the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They didn’t want me from returning home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Just weeks later, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his nation to victory and earning best player.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Influences and On-Field Identity

Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “humility” and superb skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are key strengths. He admits he must to control his competitive fire, having been sent off at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he quips.

Monaco, Mentors and Upcoming Ambitions

With his current club, he cherishes the guidance of teammates like Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “When I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are really lucky,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about targeting the main Africa Player of the Year down the line.

“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, Lamine Camara blends humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
