Two Cuba-bound Humanitarian Vessels Reported Missing after Departing Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive rescue and recovery effort is presently in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of unlocated boats carrying humanitarian supplies en route from the Mexican coast to Havana.
Naval Search and Rescue Efforts Launched
Mexico has sent navy personnel and military search aircraft to find the two vessels, which were transporting no fewer than 9 sailors, per a military release.
The boats had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been radio silence from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
Context of Aid to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over recent weeks, as the island endures repeated national electricity failures.
"The captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with suitable navigational gear and emergency beacons," a spokesperson involved in the effort said.
The nine individuals on board are nationals of the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Officials said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their diplomatic representatives.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the statement continued.
Earlier Relief Shipment
Earlier in the week, the Cuban authorities warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered a significant amount of relief supplies to the country.
That boat, nicknamed "a modern Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Castro came back to Cuba to launch the revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar panels, pharmaceuticals, baby formula, cycles and provisions.
Broader International Backdrop
Charity groups and individuals have primarily led attempts to bring essential supplies to Cuba since January, a period which saw a energy blockade on the Communist-run nation was initiated.
The United Nations have since warned of ""critical" shortages of supplies, with over 50k surgical procedures called off in Cuba amid energy rationing.
Foreign policy measures have increased in recent months, with statements from different representatives underscoring the complicated nature of diplomatic ties.
Responding to certain proposals, a senior Cuban official stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not up for negotiation."
Reports suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.
The naval forces said it was pledged to using the full extent of its capabilities at its reach to find the sailboats and ensure the safety of the people on board.
At this time, there has been no public statement on the missing boats by the Cuban leadership.
