UK Ready to Use Immobilized Russia's Assets to Fund Ukraine's War Effort
The UK is prepared to move forward with using the total value of frozen Russia's holdings to support the Ukrainian war effort, PM Sir Keir Starmer has stated.
In a collective announcement, the heads of state of the United Kingdom, France, and Germany stated that this joint measure would heighten pressure on Russia's leader Vladimir Putin and compel Russia to participate in talks.
They clarified that the decision would be implemented in strong partnership with the America.
British sanctions have frozen over £25bn of Russian resources since Russia initiated its comprehensive attack against Ukraine in 2022. Yet, up to this point, resources allocated to Ukraine using Russian assets had solely been sourced from profits and interest accrued on them.
Sir Keir told President Volodymyr Zelensky that the UK, France, and Germany were united in their aim to advance efforts toward using the complete amount of the immobilized Russian sovereign holdings to conclude the conflict.
He stated that additional sanctions in the coming days and weeks would apply more pressure on the Russian government.
This announcement is subsequent to European Union leaders met in Copenhagen previously to discuss using seized Russian holdings for a 140-billion-euro credit to Ukraine.
In the previous month, President Donald Trump urged Group of Seven partners to seize or otherwise use seized Russian funds, based on reports.
The total of seized Russia's assets in the Europe is calculated to be approximately €211bn.

The Russian government launched widespread aerial attacks all over the Ukrainian territory on recently, resulting in blackouts in large parts of the capital city, the city, and multiple additional areas.
Several persons were killed and no fewer than 20 people were hurt in the strike, Ukrainian officials stated.
In a update on X after the attack, Zelensky wrote that the cynical and calculated attack aimed at non-military and power facilities.
"What's needed is not just talk but concrete steps - from the United States, the European Union, and the Group of Seven - in providing defense mechanisms and applying penalties," he stated.
"All penalty impositions undermines the Russian war effort," Zelensky wrote, in a different message.
Additionally that day, Zelensky stated to the press he would urge Sir Keir to participate in the Purl program, under which alliance members purchase arms from the United States to provide to Ukraine.
While praising the UK's firm backing for Ukraine, he said it should demonstrate clearly that it would participate in the program, as well as impose further restrictions on the Russian Federation.
